2019 4th Grade Tournament Results / Recap:
It was a beautiful day for the Colonie Soccer Club 4th Grade tournament – the event was well attended with a lot of player representation from each school, as well as a number of coaching volunteers from the schools. We were also fortunate to have volunteers from the club soccer program at Colonie to assist with the coaching responsibilities. The Forest Park team was coached by alum Justin Womeldorph, who because of a last-minute conflict for the school representative, coached his squad alone. The Roessleville team was coached by Mike Palmer, and assisted by 2 u14 players, Connor Fay and Brianna Toro. Taking the helm for the Saddlewood team was Courtney Aperance, who was assisted by former Saddlewood student Jack Connelly. Shaker Road was led into battle by Lisa Berner, who was assisted by Tyler Schawk. Lastly, Edward Drucker led the Veeder squad, and Kashius Mostransky was his assistant coach. Anthony Baumann and Liam Gibney handled the referee duties, while Eric Morales assisted in coordination of the games on the field.
Because this was a round-robin format with 5 schools, each team had a ‘bye’ built into the schedule. In the first round, Veeder and Shaker Road were both victorious over their opponents, Roessleville and Forest Park, respectively. The second round saw Roessleville sneak out a win against Forest Park team that fought till the very end. Meanwhile, Saddlewood and Veeder engaged in a strong defensive battle, ending with a 0-0 tie. The third round saw Saddlewood best Forest Park, while Shaker Road defeated Roessleville. As we got into the fourth round, the championships were getting closer and closer, and the participants were very aware of their standings and what they needed to do to proceed. Shaker Rd seemed determined to punch their ticket to the finals by defeating Saddlewood, while on field 4, Veeder fought their way to a victory over Forest Park. As we entered the final round, it appeared that the four teams taking the field still had a chance to appear in the championship round. In this final round, Shaker Rd and Saddlewood both battled to defeat their opponents, Roessleville and Veeder, respectively. At this time, the championship round was set!
After a short break, Shaker Rd and Saddlewood took the field. This was a hard-fought contest, with the game tied 0 – 0 for a few minutes. The tie was broken with a score, then quickly became tied again. As time continued to tick away and neither team willing to quit, we approached the final minute of the tournament with Shaker Rd scoring another goal. At this point, Saddlewood turned up the intensity, displaying running and shooting that showed they weren’t done yet. Unfortunately for them, it was too little, too late, as the final horn sounded ending the game, with Shaker Rd Elementary being crowned 4th Grade Tournament Champions for 2019.
